The primary cause of stale blocks is that another block was added to the chain faster than the first one could be added, often due to network delays. In Ethereum, every stale block that is a direct descendant of a main chain (regular) block may be referenced as an uncle or ommer block from one of the following regular blocks (nephew) up to a maximum distance of 6 blocks after the fork (see Fig. 1 with description below).
